The chemical composition of glass and quartz glass is mainly silica. Silica in glass is usually one silicon atom combined with four oxygen atoms in a tetrahedron. Each silica tetrahedron forms a three-dimensional network through silicon-oxygen bonds, such that silicon and oxygen atoms form an irregular six-membered ring. Quartz glass is flexible because the angle between Si-O-Si is easy to change, and this ring structure is relatively stable. Different ***mers are formed according to the size of the silicon-oxygen bond angle. Quartz glass has a silicon-oxygen angle of 150o, which is the simplest glass. Usually people call it quartz. It has a highly cross-linked three-dimensional structure, so it has a high melting point (nearly 2000°C) and a low coefficient of thermal expansion. It is mainly composed of silicon dioxide, contains very few metal oxides, has good chemical corrosion resistance and high tensile strength. It has chemical inertness, good thermal stability, and the inner surface is smooth and easy to wet.
